Justene Williams: She Came Over Singing Like a Drainpipe Shaking Spoon Infused Mixers

This exhibition is now closed

Australian artist Justene Williams uses performance and ephemeral materials to produce a sensory overload of shapes, patterns and colours in the vibrantly theatrical video work.

Australian artist Justene Williams embraces outmoded and obsolete video equipment in the production of her exuberant video work. Her highly coloured abstract set designs create a sensory overload of shapes, patterns from ephemeral materials such as cardboard, paper and found objects. It is within these settings that Williams films herself and others performing in equally colourful costumes, designed by the artist, that often blend into the backdrop. The vibrant theatricality of her video work conjures up impressions of early twentieth-century avant-garde movements such as Futurism, Dadaism and the stage and costume designs of the legendary Russian modernists Goncharova and Larionov.
