An immersive and open-ended sculptural response to colour and space.
Look slowly and see deeply with one of New Zealand’s most respected installation artists. For Rhodes, blue is a colour rich in associations, recalling the sea, the sky, our ‘blue planet’ viewed from space. It’s also a state of mind – clear, calm, reflective and melancholy. Blue Mind combines a wide array of materials, from kelp and cloth to stained wood and glass, that Rhodes has accumulated, salvaged and often recycled over many years and multiple projects. Through her acute understanding of spatial relationships, they transformed into a captivating meditation on vulnerability, fluidity and impermanence.

Rhodes's work is perceptual and experimental, often involving materials that reveal the weathering of the years to indicate the passing of time. This installation has been created specifically for the Annex space.
Commentary
Pauline Rhodes: Blue Mind
Painted blue and patterned with rust, the thin plywood panels and screens lean nonchalantly around the walls of the gallery and form a skyline of sorts. Across the floor sculptures intersect the space, with groupings of tall rods, waist-high enclosures, clusters of plywood shapes and a small kayak frame on salvaged seaweed and driftwood. Islands for the audience to navigate. The forms are roughly human in scale and relative to the body, generating an intensity and making this an immersive installation to wade through.
